GAPS began with a simple, powerful idea: Gary’s alumni are one of its greatest untapped strengths. In the early 2010s, Carlton L. Guthrie, a proud graduate of Gary’s schools and successful manufacturing executive, recognized that the city’s young people needed more than isolated programs — they needed connection. They needed to see what was possible, meet people who believed in them, and access real pathways that could shape their futures.

Guthrie and a small group of committed alumni began building GAPS as a bridge between Gary’s past excellence and its future potential. What started as a volunteer-driven effort grew into a structured ecosystem of mentorship, exposure, and opportunity — powered by alumni pride and community partnership.

Over the years, GAPS expanded its programs, strengthened its school relationships, and developed a model that helps students explore careers, prepare for life after graduation, and build confidence in their own abilities. The organization continues to evolve under dedicated leadership, including Lisa Bennett, who now serves as Chair and Acting Executive Director, carrying forward the spirit of connection and community commitment that shaped GAPS from the beginning.
